Traveling to Varanasi, the spiritual heart of India, was a long-cherished dream finally realized. As I boarded the Shabd Bhedi Express at 11 PM, excitement coursed through me. After a night of anticipation, I reached Varanasi Junction at 10 AM, ready to immerse myself in the city's divine energy and timeless charm.
My stay at a backpackers’ dormitory on Chauki Ghat added to the authenticity of the trip. The rooftop space offered a breathtaking view of the Ganga, perfect for soaking in the serene atmosphere. The first day was dedicated to exploring nearby temples—Kedar Gauri, Sankat Mochan, Durga Temple, and smaller, equally captivating shrines. The streets thronged with devotees, each bringing their unique stories and faith.
A private boat ride on the Ganga in the afternoon was both peaceful and enlightening. As we passed from one ghat to another, the boatman narrated ancient tales, weaving history into the picturesque views. Though the reserved boat was pricey, budget-friendly group boats are an excellent option for travelers.
The highlight of my day was witnessing the Ganga Aarti at Assi Ghat. The synchronized rituals, chants, and music under the evening sky were mesmerizing. Post-Aarti, I strolled along the ghats, enjoying a steaming cup of tea in the chilly air. The sight of ancient buildings standing tall along the banks and the sadhus resting on the ghats added an almost cinematic touch to the experience.
The next morning began with a visit to the Kaal Bhairav Mandir, followed by the iconic Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Opting for a VIP darshan, I was able to complete my visit without much delay. The chants of "Har Har Mahadev" resonated through the air, filling me with a profound sense of peace and positivity.
Exploring Varanasi's street food was an adventure in itself. From kachoris and lassi to an array of sweets and fritters, every bite was a burst of fresh, authentic flavors. The warmth and hospitality of the locals added to the charm.
The Manikarnika and Harishchandra Ghats offered a stark yet profound reminder of life’s transient nature. The sight of the cremation rituals left me introspective, emphasizing the ultimate equality of all humans in the face of mortality.
My two-day trip concluded as I boarded the night train back to Kolkata. Varanasi, with its spiritual energy, vibrant culture, and timeless beauty, left an indelible mark on my heart. Despite minor inconveniences like traffic mismanagement, the city’s essence overshadowed them all.
Varanasi is a city that stays with you—a place where spirituality, history, and culture converge. Whether you seek divine blessings, cultural immersion, or simply wish to experience the pulse of an ancient city, Varanasi is a journey worth taking.
