Apple has officially introduced the iPhone 16e, a more affordable version of the iPhone 16, marking a significant move into the budget smartphone market. Priced at $599, the iPhone 16e will launch on February 28 and stands out as the cheapest iPhone to support Apple Intelligence, the company's suite of AI-powered features. This release signals a strategic shift, replacing the iPhone SE, which was last updated in 2022 and accounted for only 5% of US iPhone sales. Unlike the SE, which retained an older design with a home button, the iPhone 16e features a modern look similar to Apple’s latest flagship models, making it a more appealing option for budget-conscious buyers who still want access to the latest technology.
A major highlight of the iPhone 16e is Apple’s first in-house 5G modem, designed to improve power efficiency and reduce Apple’s reliance on external chip suppliers. This development comes more than five years after Apple acquired Intel’s smartphone modem business in 2019, demonstrating the company’s commitment to controlling its hardware ecosystem. Along with this advancement, the iPhone 16e retains many premium features found in the standard iPhone 16, including a 6.1-inch display, Face ID, a 48-megapixel camera, and the Action button for customizable shortcuts. However, to keep costs lower, Apple has removed the secondary ultra-wide camera and the Camera Control button from this model.
One of the most significant aspects of the iPhone 16e is its integration with Apple Intelligence, making AI-driven features more accessible to a wider audience. Users will be able to experience ChatGPT-powered Siri interactions, AI-generated emojis and images, real-time notification summaries, and advanced photo-editing tools. The addition of AI tools to a budget-friendly device highlights Apple’s growing focus on artificial intelligence and its intent to compete with companies like Google and Samsung, which have been aggressively pushing AI features in their smartphones.
Apple CEO Tim Cook teased the launch on February 13, calling the iPhone 16e a "new member of the family," emphasizing its importance in Apple's expanding product lineup. While Apple has been somewhat late in bringing AI capabilities to its devices compared to competitors, the iPhone 16e reinforces the company’s belief that AI is a core part of the future smartphone experience. However, with iPhone revenue falling short of Wall Street’s expectations in early 2025, it remains to be seen whether AI features alone will be enough to drive consumer demand and boost sales. The launch of the iPhone 16e reflects Apple’s strategic bet on AI-powered smartphones, and only time will tell if this move will pay off in an increasingly competitive market.
